——Rebates of up to $100,000 for charging station equipment.

——The state aims to have 250,000 public chargers by 2025.

Charging Station Must Be Accessible to the Public

If you are considering building an EV charging station in a low-income area of San Diego County, California. The good news is that you are eligible for the rebate as long as the charging station is open to the public.

The rebates are limited to economically disadvantaged areas because of  the EV penetration in these areas lags behind wealthier areas.

Rebates for charging equipment can cover 50% of the project cost or up to $100,000. This money will be allocated to DC devices with fast charging capabilities.

Not having enough charging stations in my area is one of the reasons people are reluctant to buy electric vehicles,” said Evan Wright, director of electric vehicle infrastructure projects and electric vehicles.

Wright also said: “We think this is the wave of the future because obviously people don’t have a lot of time to charge their vehicles and fast chargers ensure you get the most bang for your buck.”

The Policy behind Charging Stations

The excellent future market prospects of charging stations have policy basis.

Former Gov. Jerry Brown set a goal in 2018 to have 5 million zero-emission vehicles on California roads by 2030.

Two years later, Brown’s successor, Gavin Newsom, issued an executive order banning the sale of new gasoline-powered passenger vehicles until 2030.

Last year, the California Air Resources Board order set out more details, requiring at least 35% of 2026 model-year passenger cars and trucks sold in California to be zero-emissions. This number is rising year by year and will reach 68% by 2030 and 100% by 2035.

Last month, the Energy Commission announced that in the second quarter of this year, 25.4% of light vehicle sales in the state came from zero-emission vehicles.

“The ultimate goal is decarburization,” Wright said. “If you don’t have charging stations, people will definitely be more hesitant to at least explore the electric vehicle market. So if you build these charging stations out and make them accessible to everyone, we think we’ll get the results we want.”

The state aims to have 250,000 public chargers by 2025. There are currently just under 92,000 charging stations across California, according to the latest data compiled by the Energy Commission.

The subsidy application window opened on Wednesday and closed on December 12.

The number of charging stations in California is far from reached. Thanks to this subsidy program, investing in quality fast charging stations in California will now be the lowest cost.
